Dr. Anthony J. Oliver

A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Anthony J. Oliver serves as Chief Schools Officer for New Schools for Alabama. Previously, he served as Founder and Executive Director of Empower Community Schools  in Bessemer, Alabama.

Anthony began his career in education as a mathematics teacher and coach in the Tarrant and Vestavia Hills school systems.  In addition to his work as a teacher, he has also been an assistant principal in Jefferson County Schools and a principal in Birmingham City Schools. Before becoming a school leader, Anthony served as the founding Executive Director of Breakthrough Birmingham.

Dr. Oliver, a lifelong student himself, holds several degrees and professional designations. He holds a B.A. in Mathematics from the Virginia Military Institute, an M.A.E. in Mathematics Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Alabama-Birmingham, an Ed. M in School Leadership from Har
